UW men’s golf team comes up short at NCAA Regional

Entering the day 12 shots back of a qualifying position, the No. 10 Washington men’s golf team made a run early at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional but couldn’t keep the momentum going, ultimately finishing eighth after the final round. The Huskies ended their run at 20-over par, coming in with an 860 collectively.

“This one hurts,” head coach Alan Murray said. “We were in a big hole headed into the round and the guys came out firing and gave ourselves a chance. In the end we just hit too many bad shots for the week.”

Thanks in large part to a bogey-free front nine with five birdies from Taehoon Song, the Huskies shot seven-under through nine holes to give themselves a chance. While at one point sitting just a few strokes outside of fifth, the back-nine proved to challenging.

Song ultimately ended the round five-under, firing a 65, the third best round of the day. The senior closed as the second highest finishing Husky at tied for 28th, six-over overall. Teddy Lin led the way for UW, posting a two-over round to finish three-over, tied for 12th.

Finn Koelle’s even-par 70 was the second best round of the day, mixing three birdies with three bogeys to finish seven-over, tied for 31st. Bo Peng and Petr Hruby rounded things out for the Huskies, finishing tied for 37th at eight over and tied for 50th at 13-over, respectively.
